What is Cognos?
Cognos is an experimental online forum. Anyone may post material on it.

Suggestions are welcome. You can post them under the main category, "Suggestions", or write me at bruceh@synapps.com.

Do I need an account to post items on Cognos?

Items are displayed in order of rank with the highest rank at the top. Rankings range from 1o.0 = highest to 1.0 = lowest.

Can someone without a signin ID participate as a guest?
Yes. Use "guest as your signin ID and "guest" as the password (do not enter the quotes). As a guest you can do everything except receive alerts or receive messages. -- bh Edit this (Last edited 5/5/06)

Why is my e-mail address required to register?
Requiring a valid e-mail address ensures one person, one signin ID at Cognos. It also lets you receive alerts and messages, if desired. Your address is kept confidential. It is not used for solicitations, and is not given to anyone. (Note: You can sign in as "guest" if you prefer not to register.) -- bh Edit this (Last edited 5/5/06)

What kinds of items can I post?
Written material, new category headings, links to other web sites. Images, video clips, and audio clips that exist on other web sites. (Uploading is not supported.) Opinion polls.

Can I be alerted when there are new Cognos postings?
Yes. If you have a signin ID (click Register above), you can receive e-mail alerts. Go to the page whose postings you want alerts for and click the yellow bell icon at the top or bottom of the page. Posting alerts are sent to your e-mail address. (Note: To test your new alert setup, do a post using the "guest" signin ID. An alert is not sent to you for a post from your own signin ID.) -- bh Edit this (Last edited 5/5/06)

Can I send a message to an author?
Yes (unless an author disallows it via their Profile settings.) Clicking on the author's ID below an item will let you send a message. -- bh Edit this (Last edited 6/13/03)

How do I post a link to another web page or to an image?
Post a link to a web page (or image or audio clip) by copying and pasting that page's URL, including the "http", from your browser's Address box.

(If the Address box is not visible at the top of your browser, pick View/Toolbars/Address bar.)

If you want special text instead of the URL to be displayed as the hyperlink name, put that text inside square brackets ("[]") after the URL. (You must leave a space between the URL and the bracketed text.)

For example (ignoring the hyphens): entering "h-t-t-p://slashdot.org/ [Slashdot]" will look like this: [Slashdot]

How can I send a Cognos page to a friend?
Click on the speeding envelope icon at the top or bottom of the page you want to send. An e-mail form will display, letting you enter the friend's address and a message. (Added to your message will also be a special Cognos instant registration link for your friend.) -- bh Edit this (Last edited 5/5/06)

What new features are being added to Cognos?
